Elena’s first Christmas
We have been enjoying Elena’s first Christmas with us.
On Christmas Eve, after we read the Chrismas story from Luke and have a time of prayer we usually open our Presents then. Kati passed out everyones present so we all had ours in front of us then we take turns opening each present seeing what the others got. Since it was Elena’s first Christmas I decided to let her open one of hers all by herself. We were amazed that she did just that. I made a small rip in the paper so she could have a hand hold and she had fun ripping it open.
We tried to capture the moment on video so we hope you enjoy it.
Lantern Festival
I am trying to get caught up a bit on this site.
A few weeks ago Kati’s kindergarten celebrated Lantern Fest. (Visit the picasa link below to see more)
The children made small lanterns (flashlights) and we walked around the neighborhood singing some songs. After the walk a “fire balloon” was set off, pictures are below. the small piece of wood was burned and created enough warm air for the balloon to rise. We all watched it go up and up and up and up untill we coudn’t see it. Then we went inside to watch a reinactment of St. Martin sharing with a begger. St. Martin tore his coat and shared his bread with him.
I think I was the only one there who kept on wondering what ever happened to that fire balloon. It was around the time of the fires in California and that was all I could think about.

Kati meets Nikolaus Kindergarten
This week Kati’s kindergarten had a visitor, Nikolaus.
Ttraditionally children here would put out a boot between Dec. 5th and Dec. 6th and St. Nikolaus would put small change to the ones who were well behaved. Kati had fun and I am not sure if she thinks he is real or not. We have talked about Santa Clause and she knows he is not real but St. Nikolaus isn’t Santa Clause and St. Nikolaus did come to her kindergarten……
